À Rebours is a fascinating exhibition of work by the British Artist William Tillyer shown recently at Bernard Jacobson Gallery. His work redefines and reinterprets classic subject matter, like landscapes, still life and portraits, in methods that challenge historical traditions and vary between bodies of work. The artist has long been inspired by 19th Century French author Joris-Karl Huysman’s seminal work from which the exhibition takes its name À Rebours, meaning ‘against nature’ or ‘against the grain’. A new and exciting translation by acclaimed author and translator Theo Cuffe is illustrated by Tillyer.
