I started this painting from a charcoal sketch made on site. My main focus was the perspective and light. I used brushes and a palette knife, impasto paint texture in foreground and sky.

This painting was made using sketches and photographs of the area around the loch. My main interest was the way the road leads the observer into the distance and the red earth along one side of it.

This painting was created in the studio using sketches and photographs made on site. It was during typical weather in the Outer Hebrides – heavy storms and then a strong light coming from the western horizon over the sea. I was taken by the sweep of the road down to the coast which led straight towards the light. I liked the contrast between the hard feeling of the road barrier and the wildness of the landscape and the weather. The painting was made using brushes and palette knives.

This painting is one of a series of 6 paintings of the Kerry landscape. Painted in the studio using many sketches and photographs made during a week’s stay in the “Ring of Kerry” area. The painting developed from several acrylic washes with subsequent layers in oil leaving some areas where the acrylic staining can be seen. This series is about the effect of frequent rain on the colours in the landscape and the strong light spreading from the Atlantic coast.

This painting is the sixth in a series of paintings of the moors and mountains of Kerry. This one was painted after I made a sea series of pastel drawings which focused more on the use of stronger colours than previous paintings.

2017 – 2021
This painting of the beach at Calgary on the Isle of Mull was created using several watercolour sketches made on site. It was a cool day, very overcast, then later, light came from the west and glimpsed the headland spreading itself over the sea. It was originally painted in 2017 but in 2021 I made some changes to lighten the headland and emphasise the green of the sea. It was painted with brushes and palette knives and has impasto work and texture on the foreshore.

This painting is one of a series of large format paintings of the hilltop villages of Monferrato. It is a favourite subject of mine with the distinctive profile of the town of Montiglio and the way the hillside spreads out like an apron. I made changes to the original painting in 2021 to darken the greens and to balance the ochres and Naples yellow.

This painting is one of a pair (the other is Sunrise in Monferrato). It is a winter sunset inlet Autumn and although the orange foreground might normally suggest warmth – as might the pale orange of the sky, the painting is about the blue cold of the shadows on the hillsides as the sun goes down.

This painting is of the landscape where I live in Italy. It is one of a series of paintings where I was interested in developing mark making and looser use of paint – moving a little towards abstraction in order to convey more of the feeling of the landscape. I chose a portrait proportionality to emphasise the height of the hilltop villages in the area.

This painting is of one of the many hilltop towns near where I live – Murisengo but the key subject is the ploughed fields below the town. In late summer after ploughing the soil changes colour while it is drying out – from orangey reds and browns through to naples yellow. At this point in the year the fields seem to fill the landscape more than usual. I have deliberately exaggerated the colours as they are the real subject of the painting. For the same reason I have introduced a vertical perspective.

This painting is about the winter light and deep shadows in a typical Piemonte landscape- painted in a way which brings the foreground up close and eliminates the middle ground. Painted in 2016 it is a foretaste of my later landscapes where I focus more on the foreground.
