Light as air, soft as balm.

What does it feel like to have a Hellen van Berkel designer silk scarf enfold you in its soft and gentle embrace? Imagine the wing of a butterfly accidentally caressing your cheek or the breath of a breeze that doesn’t even get the daffodils nodding. Not so much a physical touch then as a tender exhalation.

“Life is a Party. Dress for it.” Audrey Hepburn.

For there can’t be a more feminine article on the face of the earth than a gorgeous silk scarf.

The collection isn’t a subtle feminine statement though, oh no. It’s far more than that. It looks stunning but not in a quiet way. It’s bold and vivacious, glamorous and brash even.

The Hellen van Berkel Limited Edition Scarf Collection is recognisable by its authentic, often idiosyncratic and beautifully layered features and in it, you can discern Hellen the visionary.

Creating, not following fashion.

The success of the collection lies in its original guiding principles. Hellen doesn’t follow fashion trends or answer to voracious commercial demands. From the very beginning she threw and still throws herself into making limited editions of her scarves and takes joy and pride in her daring and often avant-garde designs.

The scarves are artworks in their own right. They are certainly original and beautiful enough to be so and are intended to make their owner feel special in their soft caress.

Prints charming and lovely.

Hellen combines various techniques, including very traditional ones such as handmade embroidery. This is a unique craft that has its source in India where these skills are passed down through generations. But Hellen dares to use contrasting crafts within a single product resulting in exciting combinations of hand-block printing, hand rolled hems, hand embroidery or silkscreen, with contemporary digital techniques such as machine hems, digital printing and computerised machine embroidery. She is certainly no luddite and embraces any technique, ancient or modern, that enhances her art.

Hellen’s designs are known and loved by a variety of interior-design and fashion brands and by a number of museums.

Hellen van Berkel Scarf Collection

Hellen advises brands about colour, material, pattern and motifs, and technique as well as designs. In addition, she continues to develop bespoke collections for several museums. Taking cues from a variety of works of art, these collections combine artistry, inspiration, and cutting-edge techniques in everyday luxuries ideally suited to international lovers of art. For the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, she designs scarves inspired by materials and objects and artworks in their collection—and has been commissioned to produce scarves on the occasion of special exhibitions as well. Other museums in the Netherlands and in France, Germany, and Portugal have followed suit, and recently, she has delivered designs to the Guggenheim and the Frick Museums in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.
