Spare. Prince Harry The Duke of Sussex.
Just in case you’ve been out in space, stuck up a mountain or in a cave and all without an internet connection or phone coverage for the last few months, there’s a brand-new book out. It’s written by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and is shockingly candid about the way he and his wife Megan have allegedly been treated by the Royal Family. It’s a perfectly, or dreadfully timed (depending which camp you happen to be in) companion piece to Netflix’s explosive Harry & Megan series in which they gave their version of recent events.
The book is called ‘Spare’ as in ‘an heir and a spare’. The Duke of Sussex announced the deal in the summer of 2021. His publishers described the work as “a literary memoir” that will detail “his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father”.
Harry, meanwhile, stressed that he would be writing the book “not as the prince I was born, but as the man I have become”. So there’s so much more to it than the battle royal, the famous and it seems ever-deepening rift with his brother although that’s what is getting all the publicity.
It also happens to be an account of a 12 year-old boy who lost his much-loved mother in tragic circumstances, grew up in the public eye having to stiffen the sinews and summon up the blood, went off the rails a bit but came good in the end (again, depending which camp you happen to be in). Sounds like a good film.
Waterstones says
“In what is undoubtedly one of the biggest memoirs of 2023, Prince Harry tells his side of the story about life within the Royal Family with his characteristic warmth and honesty.”
So an assault on the senses or just a storm in a very posh teacup? Who knows? Forget the hype.
