The masterclass workshops will run for two or four days, 10am to 4pm, lunch and refreshments are included.
Summerleaze Gallery is situated in an exceptionally peaceful and beautiful corner of Wiltshire, yet within easy reach of London by road and rail. The workshops space is converted from farm buildings, having a wonderful sense of space and light. There will be some teatime entertainment in the form of a film or talk on two of the days.
Life Workshops
The Life Masterclass course introduces the intricacies of working from the model, not just for the technically minded, but also for those who are interested in a painter’s perspective on the role and importance of drawing from life. Working from models each day, the Masterclass explores a range of processes and techniques including the use of colour to introduce subtleties and presence, as well as advice on capturing a likeness and overcoming difficulties. There will be with a number of shorter sketching studies from the life model, investigating form through a variety of approaches and drawing materials including willow charcoal, graphite, pastels and pencil. The two and four day courses will introduce longer poses, giving you time to develop more sustained and individual works.
Figurative painting is inherently difficult and requires a unique understanding of and sensitivity to the model. As an acclaimed figurative painter, Anthony Connolly provides insights into the artistic visual language of painting from life.

Still Life Workshops
This Still Life Masterclass will introduce you to the timeless genre of still life painting and drawing. You will explore classical and contemporary methods, tools and techniques for the creation of evocative still life artworks.
You will focus on a range of themes within the genre of still life, looking closely at form, colour, texture and composition. Master the qualities of light and reflection using a variety of materials, from black and white as well as colour, working from a wide selection of still life objects.
Expert personal tuition and feedback will give you the opportunity to develop your individual skills and techniques, as well as a visionary approach to still-life painting, all within a small group gallery space.

Anthony Connolly RP
Portrait, life and still Life drawing is central to my own practice as a professional painter and the workshops are built around this discipline. I work mainly in oils and you should feel free to work in whatever media you choose. We will work directly from the model over a period of four days. This should provide enough scope should you wish to produce more sustained pieces alternatively you may prefer to explore different approaches, subjects and media. We will also take some time out to reflect upon the work of other artists. Anthony Connolly is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He has twice been awarded the Prince of Wales Prize for Portrait Drawing (2004 and 2012). In 2009 he won the Changing Faces Prize and in 2014, the AXA Insurance Prize for Drawing. His book, ‘Painting Portraits’ was published by the Crowood Press in October 2011.
