On Love. One Love.
It’s the most loaded phrase in the universe. It can change lives and whole countries completely from what they otherwise might have been.
Careful how you use it.
It can start dynasties and cause catastrophes. So careful how you use it. It’s a feather and a blowtorch. Guess what it is yet? That simple, calming, incendiary, devastating phrase is this: I love you. Yep. 3 little one syllable words that can change the course of history.
So many ways to say it.
There are so many ways of saying it too. From ‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day, Thou art more lovely and more temperate’ etc. (thanks Shakespeare) All the way to ‘I love you through sparks and shining dragons, I do’ (thanks The Guillemots) It’s been sung and shouted and breathlessly uttered in the grip of passion. It’s been said laughing joyfully and whispered quietly.
William Tillyer À Rebours. The Crimson Cubicles series.
It’s been said laughing joyfully and whispered quietly.
But there’s something else you can do other than whispering sweet nothings to the one you love. That is to get the one you love, a sweet something.
Something that says you’ve been listening to every word he or she has said, even when it looks like you haven’t been.
Even if words haven’t even been spoken, you’ve read between the lines or deciphered the subtext.
You may even have remembered an allusion to something that occurred months ago. If so, that gets you top marks.

Yes, real love is instinctive and intuitive, mysterious and sacred. Ethereal even and not of this world.
But for all that, it’s still nice to get something lovely that is most definitely of this world from time to time.
