This Portrait Masterclass course introduces the intricacies of working from the model, not just for the technically minded, but also for those who are interested in a painter’s perspective on the role and importance of drawing from life. Working from models each day, the Portrait Masterclass explores a range of processes and techniques including the use of colour to introduce subtleties and presence, as well as advice on capturing a likeness and overcoming difficulties. There will be with a number of shorter portrait sketching studies from the life model, investigating form through a variety of approaches and drawing materials including willow charcoal, graphite, pastels and pencil. The four day course will introduce longer poses, giving you time to develop more sustained and individual works.
Portrait painting is challenging and also requires a unique understanding of and sensitivity to the model.
As an acclaimed portrait painter, Anthony Connolly provides insights into the artistic visual language of portrait painting.

The Portrait Masterclass workshops will run for up to four days, 10am to 4pm, materials, lunch and refreshments are included. Summerleaze Gallery is situated in an exceptionally peaceful and beautiful corner of Wiltshire, yet within easy reach of London by road and rail. The workshops space is converted from farm buildings, having a wonderful sense of space and light.
