Bruce Mclean | A Jug, A Vase and A Grey Interior, 2023. Contemporary artist Bruce Mclean makes his own rules – he has done ever since the 1960s, when he blazed the trail of British conceptual art with his distinctive brand of abstraction.

In this piece, Mclean offers his unique take on a still life, portraying a jug and a vase in a grey room.

This hand-finished silkscreen print is from a limited edition of 50, signed and numbered by the artist.

Bruce McLean

A leading figure in the development of 1960s Conceptual Art, Bruce McLean is regarded as one of the major players in contemporary British art. McLean was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1961 to 1963, and at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London, from 1963 to 1966. At Saint Martin’s, McLean studied with Anthony Caro and Phillip King.

Rebellious and pioneering, McLean helped break down the rigid formalism of visual art, loosening traditional forms into abstraction and paving the way for Pop aesthetics.

McLean began his career making sculptures from rubbish and debris, abandoning conventional art to develop a satirical commentary that mocked the pomposity of the art world and its long-established forms.

He works across a range of media, including sculpture, film, photography, printmaking, drawing and live work, which continues to be exhibited in private and public collections around the world.
