Michael Craig-Martin | Book (RA), ca. 2020.This dynamic print from Irish conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin, is from a limited-edition of just 20, produced for the Royal Academy’s exclusive RA Editions programme.
The open book, carefully cropped with its pages mid-turn, is a nod to both Craig-Martin’s impressive career as one of the most influential artists and teachers of our generation, and to the Royal Academy’s pioneering work as a centre for learning and debate.
Adopting his signature vibrant colour palette, “Book’ is a prime example of the artist’s playful and revered exploration of everyday objects.
Michael Craig-Martin
Michael Craig-Martin helped pioneer British Conceptual art in the late 20th century. His early work was influenced by Minimalist and Dada tropes. Throughout his career, the artist has made sculptural ready-mades in the vein of Marcel Duchamp and painted close-up depictions of everyday objects in vibrant colour palettes; the connection between object, image, and language has been a pervasive concern. Craig-Martin’s most famous piece, An Oak Tree (1973), consists of a glass of water on a shelf, paired with text claiming the glass is an oak tree. Such humorous conceptualism proved massively influential among the Young British Artists, many of whom Craig-Martin taught during his tenure at Goldsmiths’ College. His work belongs in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the British Council, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art and has sold for six figures on the secondary market.
