Peter Doig is a contemporary Scottish artist and one of the most important representational painters working today. He was born in Edinburgh but has come to prominence via Trinidad, Canada, London and Trinidad again. He has no fixed style, template, habits or formula. Just a gargantuan talent. His brush strokes are lines of poetry that make the personal, universal. His work has the power to touch a nerve and make us stop what we’re doing and look up in startled recognition.

Doig moved to London in 1979 attending first Wimbledon School of Art and then Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1990 where he received his MA in 1990. The following year, his friend, painter Chris Ofili invited him to an artist residency in Trinidad. Since then, he has held several solo exhibitions including “Peter Doig: No Foreign Lands” which opened in 2013 at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.

In 2007, his painting White Canoe sold at Sotheby’s for $11.3 million. In February 2013, The Architect’s Home in the Ravine sold for $12 million. Art critic Jonathan Jones said: “Amid all the nonsense, impostors, rhetorical bullshit and sheer trash that pass for art in the 21st century, Doig is a jewel of genuine imagination, sincere work and humble creativity.” Doig has lived and worked in Trinidad since 2002. His work can be seen in galleries and collections around the world including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Tate Gallery in London, and the Goetz Collection in Munich.
