Richard Hamilton | Dedicated Follower of Fashion, 1980
The title is from a song of the 1960s by The Kinks. The image is from a fashion photograph Hamilton found in a dustbin and kept for future use. It is a highly effective evocation of the 1960’s style, and at the same time a visual metaphor for the concept of style itself and the modes of representation by which style is conveyed.
Richard Hamilton (1922 – 2011) was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. A true pioneer, he sparked a revolution. Born in London, he attended evening classes at St Martin’s School of Art, before enrolling on the painting course, aged 16, at the Royal Academy in 1938. His studies were interrupted by the outbreak of war. After the war he returned to the Royal Academy but was expelled for “not profiting from instruction”. An early indication of his individualism and maverick genius. He participated in the seminal exhibition ‘This is Tomorrow’ at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1956, producing a collage entitled Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? In this collage he depicted a muscle man holding a paddle with the word ‘POP’ on it. Which heralded the whole ‘Pop Art’ movement. Throughout his career, Hamilton continued to break down hierarchies of artistic value, producing studies of industrial design objects as well as designing the cover of the Beatles’ 1968 White Album. Hamilton drew inspiration from the social changes he was witnessing: the rise of a consumer culture and political turmoil. The resulting images of protests, portraits, landscapes, often used digital technology and media to develop multiple manifestations of the same image through varying interpretations. His paintings and in particular his prints, consistently challenged and broke previously accepted boundaries.
Throughout his career Hamilton exhibited internationally. In 2013 a major retrospective exhibition was held at the Tate Modern, London and subsequently at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. Hamilton’s work is held by almost every major museum in the world.
