Samuel Waterhouse. The lasting joy of jewellery.
Based at Cockpit Arts, London, designer Samuel Waterhouse found his affinity for jewellery making at an early age. Inspired by antiquity, Samuel aims to create simple yet contemporary jewellery and silverware. Benvenuto Cellini, Italian goldsmith said that it’s
“the duty of the artist is to express noble and beautiful ideas.”
Samuel attempts to retain a minimalistic aesthetic in all his work in order that beauty can stem mainly from the surface and colour of the materials used.
His designs capture the essence of the great artists of the Renaissance period who started off their careers in goldsmith workshops learning about the accuracy of line and clarity of style. As a goldsmith, Samuel is becoming a master of specialist techniques and the influence of the classical tradition is abundant.
SEE COLLECTION→
Samuel is a self-taught jeweller and silversmith specialising in the Korean technique Keum Boo. His work derives from the art of antiquity – in particular from the shape and form of ancient ceramics, the mechanisms of ancient metalwork and the patterns found in ancient painting.
By creating his own alloys of gold he has further developed the technique of Keum Boo enabling him to create patterns made of a variety of white, green, yellow and pure gold.
He therefore uses this development to illustrate and pattern his work; occasionally oxidising exposed silver in order to create a dramatic contrast.
“My work is characterised by an affinity to the art of antiquity – in particular by the shape and form of ancient ceramics, as well as the patterns found in ancient art. In recent years I have particularly enjoyed attempting to create work that is a combination of both ancient and modern forms, decorated with patterns reminiscent of antiquity.”
