Summer’s right here. Just where you left it.
The shadows are short and the days are filled with the scent of roses and that tickle of expectation. Summer’s always so full of promises. But what’s going to replace the tense thwacks and joyous explosions of noise from a big warm-hearted Wimbledon? Or the sound of chic French seagulls wheeling over the Plage des Fosses? Time a for mini-rethink.
It’s nice out.
Pack up the picnic hamper and find your own little bit of heaven out of waving distance of anyone. It’s a beautiful land that’s inspired a renaissance like joy in its art and literature. Ask Turner, Hughes, Burns & Hockney, to name but a few. Throw down the cashmere rug and listen to the symphony playing in the trees and streams. It’s every bit as good as Glyndebourne.
Kick off your shoes and feel the earth’s soft pulse beneath your feet. There’s nothing quite so wild as wild swimming. But don’t forget your jumper or your shawl because the weather here’s as capricious as it is delicious.
Bliss it was – and is.
“Bliss it was that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven” – Wordsworth. There’s an elation in small children mixed with wonderment when they realise, they have reached the very end of the land. They’re experiencing something altogether different for the first time and for many the novelty of a trip to the coast never wears off. So go, find a cove, put down your straw basket and listen to the mesmeric waves and their sonorous percussion as they pound the rocks. Find a white sandy beach and lie on it, nothing above you, only blue.
Amazingly – and exhilaratingly, there are almost 20,000 miles of coastland in the UK to roam about on.
Rocky, pebbly, endless, majestic, white, sun-kissed, rain-lashed & empty.
What a thrilling thought.

We all need to wear masks. Sure. But we don’t all need to wear the same masks. Why not get a little more cachet for your cash and go for a Liberty print mask? They’re made using Tana Lawn, a lightweight cotton, soft to touch. Patterns include the Strawberry Thief, Felicite and Meadow from the Liberty Classic range. They not only look good, they do a good job too.
Incredibly £100,000 has now been raised for the NHS Charities Together; now £10 from every mask sold will be donated to other charities supporting those affected by Covid-19. The rest of the retail price covers VAT, fabric, lining, sewing and transport. For more details click here→
