Marc Quinn | Ice Age, 2023. Along with Raw Earth, Ice Age is the latest release from YBA Marc Quinn’s coveted series of Iris prints. Both pieces are circular editions, accentuating the subtle colours and curvatures of both the iris, and the overlaid map of the Atlantic.

Like a fingerprint, every human iris is entirely unique. Quinn uses these works to explore the notion of identity, describing the human eyes as, “the doors of perception, the portal between inner and outer, the link between us and the world.”

Ice Age is created from a combination of archival pigment and silkscreen printing, finished with soft white diamond dust. From an edition of 50, the piece is signed on the front and numbered on the reverse.

Marc Quinn

One of the leading artists of his generation, Marc Quinn graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in History and History of Art before switching track to contemporary visual art in the 1990s.

Working across sculpture, painting, and drawing, Quinn incorporates a broad range of materials through both traditional and modern techniques. With his critical background, Quinn suffuses every work with a sense of the profound, tackling questions of the human condition through a contemplation of science and astrology.

Well-known artworks include the sculpture of the artist’s head, cast from his own frozen blood, and his depiction of the artist Alison Lapper on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth in 2005. In 2001, Quinn also won The Royal Academy of Art’s Charles Wollaston Award for Catherine Long, a sculptural nude in white marble.
