Antoni Tàpies was a Spanish artist known for his highly textured & tactile paintings. A major source of subject matter in Tapies’s work is the artist’s relation to Catalonia.
‘If one draws things in a manner which provides only the barest clue to their meaning, the viewer is forced to fill in the gaps by using his own imagination. He is compelled to participate in the creative act, which I consider very important.’
Antoni Tapies Suite Catalana, Plate 5
A major source of subject matter in Tapies’s work is the artist’s relation to Catalonia. In 1972 he published the Suite Catalana with Gustavo Gili of Barcelona. Tapies uses the structure of the Catalan flag to create a powerful visual statement of emotion and protest. Pictorial writing, explored variously in letters, words, crossmark “X” in numerous permutations. The frenzy of emotion is heightened by names from Catalan history and art strewn across the flaglike sheet.
